The FA Cup fourth round draw was made at Wembley on Sunday 8 January 2012. This article gives the full draw and picks out some of the more interesting ties.

The draw for the fourth round of the English FA Cup was made at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 8 January 2012.

The third round, when the big teams from the Premiership and Championship entered the tournament to join the 20 survivors from the lower divisions, brought one major surprise as League Two Swindon Town knocked out Premiership side Wigan Athletic. And League Two’s Macclesfield Town managed a 2-2 draw at home to the Premiership’s Bolton Wanderers.

In the big march of the round, Manchester United regained local bragging rights with a 3-2 win away at neighbours Manchester City.

Out of the non-league clubs, Wrexham did best with a 1-1 draw away at Brighton & Hove Albion to earn a replay. In the so-called Donkey Derby, little Fleetwood Town saw their dreams go down 5-1 against near-neighbours Blackpool and Tamworth did well to lose only 2-0 away to Premiership Everton. Likewise, Salisbury City’s 3-1 defeat away to Sheffield United was a creditable effort.

Stevenage’s away win at Reading was another shock and Crawley Town continued their progress with a 1-0 victory over Bristol City. Premiership side Queens Park Rangers could only draw away at MK Dons, and needed a late equaliser to do that. And League Two Shrewsbury Town can consider themselves unlucky to leave Championship side Middlesbrough with nothing more than a 1-0 defeat after dominating for most of the match.

The fourth round will be on 28 and 29 January and the fifth round on 18 and 19 February. The quarter finals will take place on 17 and 18 March followed by the semi-finals at Wembley on 14 and 15 April and the final itself at Wembley on 5 May 2012.

FA Cup Fourth Round Ties to Watch Out For

The big match of the round has to be Liverpool, who beat Oldham Atheltic 5-1 in the third round, at home to Manchester United. Sheffield Wednesday’s reward for beating Championship side West Ham United is a trip to another Championship side – Blackpool.

Whoever wins out of Arsenal and Leeds United will face a tough home tie against Aston Villa. And the match between Sunderland and Middlesbrough will have mouths in the north-east watering. Stoke City fans will also have a short trip, away to Derby County. The other all-Premiership ties include Everton against Fulham and WBA at home to Norwich City.
